1. THIS WAR OF MINE
This app is a bit pricey, so if you’re unsure at this stage whether survival games are for you, you might want to try some free ones first before you splash out. Nevertheless, we had to include This War of Mine from 11-bit studios, as it’s simply one of the best survival games available for Android devices, despite the price. In the game, you’ll play as part of a civilian group doing their best to survive in a city under siege. You’ll face danger from enemies at the same time as having to cope with a lack of provisions and essentials such as medicines, so it’s a constant battle of wits to survive.
The game is really absorbing across day and night sequences, and it doesn’t shy away from the fact that sometimes the reality of survival will have to overrule your conscience. This War of Mine supports a variety of languages, and we can’t recommend it highly enough for the authentic experience that it offers.

Many survival games are set in a war zone or involve zombies, and that’s why we found this one rather refreshing (as well as the fact there are no in-app purchases)! There’s no combat involved, and instead, you’ll become an astronaut stranded in an unknown part of the galaxy. It will take all your strategic skills to survive in the hostile environment in which you find yourself after waking from a cryonics experiment.
You won’t be entirely alone as other intelligent species’ are out there, and the game features include 10 spaceships with varying specs, freshly generated galaxies for each new game, and a crafting system with 20 alien technologies. Downwell has a high user rating of 4.7/5 stars on the Play Store and is a great choice if you like a little retro style. It very much took us back to our gaming roots, but despite its simplistic look, there’s plenty to keep you captivated. You’ll take on the guise of a young lad called Downwell, who for some unknown reason decides to go adventuring in a deep well. It’s dark, eerie, and full of weird creatures and the unknown, but what you need to concentrate on is collecting red jewels as you go along.
This throwback game has very intuitive controls, and features include weapons and items, including lethal Gunboots that you can use against the things that are lurking.
