However, now and then, Apple produces a new feature for its iPhones that we wish were available for Android. In this case, it’s Animoji, a 3D animated message feature that comes with iPhone X in 2017, and later comes Memoji. It uses the hardware of the smartphone’s front-facing camera to replicate the facial movements of the user and makes it easy to create moving and talking emoji recordings.

This is a neat app that enables you to record your face and reflect your emotions to some adorable 3D animal models (some require an in-app purchase). All kinds of animals are available including a turtle, beaver, rabbit, owl, and squirrel, or you can opt instead for 3D emoticons showing emotions such as surprise, fun, anger, or love.

The latest update to this app offered new emojis, a leopard and tiger, and more are expected with future updates. It comes pretty close to providing an authentic animoji android experience using face-tracking with your device’s camera. You can easily share your creation within social media apps to give your friends a laugh.

2. MSQRD

This app is more basic but extremely simple to use. Simply chose which mask or filter you want to use, align your face in the area shown, press the record button, and hey presto, it really is that easy.

On opening the app you’ll see favorites across various categories, such as an astronaut, polar bear, or old woman (that one gave us a bit of a shock)! We have to say that the amount of masks is limited so you could soon run out of ideas. Nevertheless, for a free app, it does well.

3. BITMOJI – YOUR PERSONAL EMOJI

Price: Free

This is a pretty nice app with a high user rating of 4.6/5 on the Google Play Store. You can create a cartoon avatar of yourself with hundreds of options to choose from. Use Bitmoji fashion to dress the avatar to match your own style, and say anything you want to your friends.

If you use Bitmoji in Snapchat you can unlock Friendmoji with 2-person bitmojis of you and friends, or with Bitmoji for Gboard, you can share them directly from the Google Keyboard. There’s even a merchandise section selling mugs, stickers, phone cases and more. Please note that some features require the use of in-app purchases.

4. EMOJI MAKER – FREE PERSONAL ANIMATED PHONE EMOJIS

The makers of this one refer to being able to make the new kind of emojis, animated emojis (ie. Animoji). However, we’ll point out that this doesn’t use your own face and merely allows you to customize avatars with 3D animated stickers.

The customization options are decent though, including the face, beard, glasses, skin tone and more, and you can pick a mood or expression, add text, and share as animated GIF stickers or meme emojis via apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, and more. You can save your results to your gallery, and the graphics are pretty good. What we don’t like is the number of ads (learn how to get rid of ads) that are involved. If you can stand that, it’s worth trying out.

5. ANIMOJI KARAOKE MEMOJI

The makers of Animoji Karaoke point out that this is not an official Animoji app, as if we didn’t know! Nevertheless, it does give Android device users a taste of AR Emoji and 3D Animojis, with 18 characters including a chicken, dog, pig face, pile of poo, cat, and unicorn.

The app features 4 types of face morphing, more than 50 animoji faces, and the option to share your results through Facebook, Email, and more.

6. XPRESSO 3D AVATAR ANIME ANIMOJI GIF STICKER

This personalization app is a cool way to have fun, and it has some similarities to the previously mentioned Bitmoji app (also with in-app purchases). You can see yourself as a cartoon avatar with many customization options and 3D animated animoji stickers and include them in messaging through Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Twitter, and more.

The app features daily trending animations, advanced text animation, and a vast library of animated animoji and emoji stickers.

If you want to make an animated avatar of yourself but looking much cuter, this is the app for you! Zepeto has a very appealing interface and makes it simple to create your own 3D character. It works as an emoji photo editor, simply take a selfie, style your personalized avatar with various items, create your own mood, and share it with friends and family as a greeting. It’s also a nice way to represent yourself in chat rooms without giving too much away!

9. FACERIG

The app features real-time face tracking so you can really let loose with your facial expressions, and record videos or snap photos to share via social channels or direct messaging. Credits or in-app purchases are required for some avatars but there’s plenty that’s free to enjoy.

10. VIDEOMOJI: MAKE ANIMOJI AVATAR

VideoMoji enables you to choose a 3D character and animate your own emotions to express yourself. Of course, you can record videos, and it’s an entertaining way to make messages to your friends more interesting and creative.

There are some appealing characters to choose from including a clownfish (like Nemo), panda, monkey, and even a burger. We found this one to be pretty accurate at replicating facial expressions, and it’s entirely free to download and use, with no in-app purchases.
