10 Best Android VPN apps to Surf Web Anonymously

These VPN apps for android are your best bet to surf the web anonymously from your Smartphone.

If you’ve stumbled across the lists of the best VPN apps, you already know what a Virtual Private Network is. Since privacy has become a major concern, VPN services have been on the rise regardless of which gateway you choose to enter the internet. Obviously, smartphones are as relevant as laptops and desktops these days which means our focus is on mobiles.

All VPN services have the same basic function – to mask your identity online. How well that actually do that will vary, and most of the better choices will come at a cost. The selection of truly free mobile VPN’s is slim, to say the least. You’ll want to keep your usage in mind as well considering some will have unlimited plans while others lock you in on tiered data.

If you simply want to stay anonymous or watch Netflix from a different locale, most of the apps on our or list will do the trick. There are a few other things to consider as well, however. Some apps will work better with Torrent apps than others, a major concern for many looking for a VPN. Where you live, and the country you are actually trying to reach is of great importance as well.

If data encryption, anonymous web browsing, and seamless streaming are some of your primary concerns in the tech world, check out the best Android VPN apps below.

1. Turbo VPN (free)

One of the top options in our best VPN list goes to Turbo VPN. This one promises Unlimited free VPN service, and based on our brief time spent with the app, it is a rousing success. Turbo VPN was stable and makes connecting a breeze with a one-tap connect function. The means you won’t have to fiddle with settings for hours when you need to get on a network and don’t want your personal information out in the wild.

While free, Turbo VPN is ad-supported which may be a hindrance for some users. It shouldn’t be however as the ads are minimal and you will be hard-pressed to find another free VPN app this simple to use. There are no “extras” to speak of aside from the ability to select a server location. Those locations include the U.S., Canada, the UK, Singapore, and India at this time.

2. SurfEasy Secure Android VPN (free)

As the name implies, the SurfEasy Secure VPN app makes surfing the web anonymously quite easy. Regardless of your reasons for wanting to go “off the grid” while staying connected, this app can take care of your needs. Your traffic will be encrypted and safe from prying eyes, and any Hotspot connections will be taken care of as well. As a bonus, the developers promise “no logging” which is a key for some users.

What you actually get out of the SurfEasy VPN app depends on what you put into it. This one is freemium in a sense as you can get 500MB of data without spending a dime. On the downside, you have to sign-up, and they don’t offer up any details on pricing until you do. A few perks to keep in mind include Secure Torrenting, One-Click IP masking, and 500 servers spanning 28 countries.

3. VyprVPN (free)

Goldenfrog is a name that may not ring too many bells, but they are responsible for one of the more popular VPN’s available. VyprVPN is the name of the service, and it is available for your desktop as well as your smartphone or slate. They also offer up an encrypted messaging service if you need to get super sneaky with emails and messaging.

VyprVPN is free to test out, and they will give you 1GB of data to surf with as long as you sign-up for a free account. We can’t attest to their claims of “unmatched streaming speed, ” but they do offer up something called Chameleon which is said to be a new protocol for hiding VPN traffic. Throw in an exclusive encrypted DNS, 24/7 customer support and access to over 50 servers globally, and you’ve got yourself a solid VPN app for Android.

While the VyprVPN app is free to test out, you will need to choose between two plans if you like what you see. Both offer up unlimited data, but the Premium plan has 5 simultaneous connections and a few other perks for $6.67 a month. The barebones $5 plan only has 3 simultaneous connections by comparison and no additional features.

4. TunnelBear VPN (free)

If you have been using virtual private networks for a while, you are probably familiar with the name TunnelBear. The service has been around for years, and the TunnelBear VPN app has consistently been considered a fan favorite. Like the other free and paid VPN apps on our list, this one allows you to hide in plain sight by giving you a proxy for your mobile device.

TunnelBear VPN takes an interesting approach graphically with a bear-themed setup that shows your data tunneling towards freedom. The cute UI is simple to navigate although you will have to make an account to use this one. It also only comes with 500GB of free data each month while a subscription will set you back $50 per year or $9.99 each month depending on how you want to roll. Both plans include unlimited data.

5. Betternet Free VPN WiFi Proxy (free)

Betternet Free VPN is another app that promises free but limits what you actually get. On the plus side, it ranks as one of the easier apps to use with no sign-up required to test things out. As for the server locations, you can choose from 8 cities in the United States, but get the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Australia, Germany and other regions under the premium package.

The premium version of Betternet also kills the ads and allows you to link up to 5 devices to your shiny new VPN service. Tech support and a faster connection are touted as well, but it all comes at a cost. In this case, it begins at $11.99 per month if you like what you see after the 7-day trial is over.

6. ExpressVPN (free)

If you want a VPN app that offers up a little more than most, the ExpressVPN app and service may be just for you. It’s another “One-tap” solution that lets you connect with ease and promises prying eyes won’t be able to track you online. It has a massive database of servers to connect with as well including 78 countries and over 97 locations.

One major advantage of the ExpressVPN app is the fact is supported AES 256-bit encryption. That’s stronger than most and there will be no logging whether you are on your home Wi-Fi network, a hotspot or your mobile phone. While not free, the service is unlimited with pricing beginning at around $9 per month depending on which plan you choose.

7. F-Secure Freedome VPN (free)

The F-Secure Freedome VPN app can get you around regional Geo-blocks, and to the content, you want to see. Whether you are trying to view Netflix or order an item from overseas, the Freedom VPN performs admirably. Hate logging in? No problem, as you won’t have to with this app. It offers up unlimited bandwidth if you opt for a subscription and that sub will work across all devices hooked up to your Google Play account.

If you appreciate simplicity, you will enjoy the layout of the F-Secure Freedome VPN app as well. Even the newbies to the world of VPNs won’t have an issue getting things going. There are around 25 locations to connect from as well, far more than most apps on our list. The Tracker Mapper feature is pretty nifty as well considering it will show you what or who is trying to connect to your mobile.

As mentioned, the F-Secure Freedome VPN app is subscription-based. You will get a 5-day free trial however with no login or credentials required. If you like what you see, there are several plans available starting at $4.17 per month.

8. Yoga VPN (Unblock & Unlimited) (free)

Yoga VPN is one of the newer entries on our list. It’s also billed as 100% free, which seems to be the case in our limited tests. It’s also an app that screams “NO” as there is no sign-up, no logs, and no credit card information needed. That’s a great thing, especially when you are downloading a new app and are concerned about your privacy.

Yoga works off a “Rewards Point” system where usage burns through points. You start out with 2000 and can earn more through various actions from within the app including inviting friends. The selection of connectible regions is fair as well with 6 common locales and 6 special regions including Romania, Japan, and Sweeden. As long as you have points, this one is free to use and well worth a look if you need a simple VPN app.

9. PureVPN (free)

Though the 256-bit encryption is secure enough, it may slow your internet connection a bit.

It is robust and stable that you won’t need to assign PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol), L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) or SSTP Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol).

PureVPN offers a 7-day money back guarantee. This means that unsatisfied customers can get a full refund within 7 days of their subscription.

10. NordVPN (free)

NordVPN app does avery good job to keep mobile traffic secure. An easy to use interface, many servers it’s performance goes to a satisfactory level. The best thing about the provider is they don’t keep any logs of user’s behavior.

NordVPN offers monthly, half-yearly and yearly subscription plans. While the monthly subscription cost a little too much, users can opt to a six-month or yearly plan to get more discounted prices. You can still get a 7-day free trial.

While it took some digging to find the top choices for the Best VPN for Android, any of the apps on our list will mask your identity to a degree on your mobile devices. They will all be limited to an extent, however, as nothing is foolproof and common sense is always your first line of defense.

If you work in a high-security job or concerned about potential data leaks, you may want to opt for something a little more high-tech than a VPN app. It all depends on what you need one for as watching Netflix in a different country is far different than torrenting movies or games.

    • Nah! It doesn’t work on android now. the app seems to be broken. I tried to uninstall and reinstall but it still does not work. It won’t allow you to connect, even with different locations. The app crash often too, so I won’t be using purevpn again.
