SparkFun Electronics just introduced an IOIO (pronounced “yo-yo”) breakout box for Android Smartphone to allow connect or break-out Electronic circuits. IOIO is actually a small (2.7×1.2″ = 7x3cm) PCB that connects to an Android device with a USB cable and a software library (Java .jar file) that you use in your Android app which handles all communications with the board.
With this small piece of hardware your fancy DIY projects can now turn real with less efforts. IOIO breakout box can be use to control various electronic devices which relay on a switch. On their blog we have already seen a few clever mods which really awesome. Checkout below the Retroid showcase which is a retro-designed alarm clock hacked to be controlled by an Android phone. Once connected, the phone’s alarm, incoming call and incoming text message notifications appear as different ring and LED patterns on the clock.
So far, IOIO breakout box proven to work are: G1, Nexus One, Nexus S, Motorola Droid X. You can pre-order IOIO breakout box at a price of $45, will start to shipping next week.
