Pokémon Go became so popular within the first three days of its release that it received a mixed critical reception. However, as it was a big hit in the market, it is no doubt a boost in Nintendo’s stock value.
This free-to-play game allows players to capture, battle and train virtual Pokémon, who appear throughout the real world. The player gets to create their avatar after logging in for the first time.
Hair, skin, and eye colour, avatar’s style and outfits are some of the things the player will decide. Once the avatar is created, it is displayed with the player’s current location along with a map of the player’s immediate surroundings.
Pokémon Go uses your phone’s camera and GPS. As you go through Pokéstops like parks, churches, popular meeting places, or even just within your neighbourhood, your game avatar follows your route. You may encounter different types of Pokemon depending on your location. For example, while walking near the lake, you will see more Water-type Pokémon.
You could also earn free Pokéballs, Potions, and Pokémon eggs by tapping on Pokéstops and swiping the coin in the center of your screen.
Pokémon Go also allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual Pokémon, who appear throughout the real world. As the players or Pokémon trainers explore their surrounding, there is a sound that serves as a signal that there is a Pokémon nearby. As you walk near it will trigger the Pokémon to appear.
Tapping it will start the Pokébattle though the players do not battle wild Pokémon to capture them. Instead, the player must throw a Poké Ball with the right force and at the right timing to successfully catch a wild Pokémon.
Augmented reality (AR) mode uses the camera and gyroscope on the player’s mobile device to display an image of a Pokémon as though it were just in your backyard and splashing water by the pool.
The game has received mixed reviews regarding safety. As news of Pokémon fans discovering a dead body, a man causing a highway traffic trying to catch a Pikachu, a teen stabbing his brother to death because he thought he deleted his Pokémon, to name a few of the tragic incidents, Pokémon Go is still as hot as pie.
It gives a sense of brotherhood and belonging when you see someone and hear them say “There’s a Bulbasaur down there!”, but we should also keep in mind that Pokémon Go is just a game, far from reality so we should never let it command us.
Let us enjoy the immense pleasure we get through the game and benefit in its effectiveness in promoting exercise but we should also keep in mind that safety comes first.
The game is free-to-play, it supports in-app purchases of Pokéballs and other items. If you live outside the U.S., you can try downloading the Pokemon go android apk.
